Among the three main ta’veren, I’d give the edge to Matrim Cauthon.
What makes Mat stand out is the contrast between what he says and what he does. He spends much of the series insisting he’s no hero and wants nothing to do with responsibility, yet time and again he risks everything to save other people. That tension is consistently entertaining and surprisingly moving.
Some highlights of his character:
His wit and internal monologue provide much of the series’ humor.
He evolves into a brilliant battlefield commander almost against his own wishes.
His luck and memories create some of the most unique abilities in the series.
His moral compass is remarkably consistent: when someone needs help, he almost always steps up, even while complaining the entire time.
